Preziosismi
Valenza, Italy – 2009
The Preziosismi Factory and Offices in Valenza, Italy, explores the layering of program and material as an urban strategy to integrate living and working within a single building. Production, administration, and living are stacked into horizontal strata, defying single use zoning, integrating labour and domesticity through tectonic strategies that embeds everyday rhythms within a shared continuum rather than isolated domains.
Stratified Material Expression
The interplay of surfaces, materials, opacity and transparency allows architecture to execute the transformation of program and raw elements into form. In this project, stone’s compressive density grounds the company workshop at the base, its massivity anchoring industrial processes in permanence and solidity to protect the companies precious materials; metal’s precision allow for lightness/light, and defines the administrative ethos of the company, forging connective clarity and translucency, whereas timber defines the living quarters, modulating and warming, providing comfort, privacy, and delicacy while admitting light and shadow-play across diurnal cycles. A central courtyard perforates upper floors, channeling zenithal light deep into production zones for operational transparency, with residences ensuring comfort and separation—the top stratum cantilevers over a private pool to articulate volumetric hierarchy, sheltered voids, and seasonal exposures that temporalize spatial experience as stratigraphic record.
Tectonic Strategy
Surfaces reveal inherent qualities—texture, grain, reflectivity, incremental patina—allowing light, shadow, and time to shape perception. Layered construction produces subtle rhythms of enclosure and delicacy, aligning structure, material, and detail with the programatic needs of the building.
Architecture as Collective Instrument
This orchestration reclaims the building as social apparatus, dissolving private individualism into community: workshops as arenas of shared labor, administration as zones of collaboration, and elevated living as distinct realms framing urban connectivity. Distinct materiality serves ordinary needs with disciplined generosity— instrumental clarity that embeds work’s necessities within collective temporality, yielding spaces of functional rigor, perceptual acuity, and enduring poetry where the individual merges into the collective.
