RUSSIAN STANDARD RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT

International Competition of Standard Residential Development
Minister of Construction Industry, Government of the Russian Federation

Common Ground is conceived as a contemporary living system based on a flexible organization of individual and shared spaces, floating in a seamless natural environment connecting interior and exterior environments .

New Sustainability:

A ‘New Sustainability’ prescribes that in order to protect and nurture the environment, we must look beyond engineering: instead, ‘new sustainability’ proposes to mix urban density and social variety with natural phenomenon.

Landscapes, Weather patterns and the Metropolis combine to create living environments.

Within the Common Ground development, three overriding principles are proposed:

Firstly, densification, secondly a respect and use of natural systems, and thirdly, the notion of a balanced domestic environment with equal respect for the individual and the common good.

The Common Ground project fully embraces the idea of creating a standard building typology in keeping with the image of a contemporary Russian culture.

We propose above all a system of hybrid landscapes, conceived of floating ground planes / terrain, or slabs, of varying sizes, heights and  configurations allowing for interplay between openness and privacy that fosters seamless living between inside and outside.

We propose a system which is infinitely flexible, which provides generous domestic environments, which allows for individual dignity and communal well-being, which is transparent, elegant, simple and measured; as such, its architecture reflects the vision and values of the Russia of tomorrow, the Russia of a Common Ground.

Our intention is to enable all occupants of the Common Ground a generous environment, providing them a choice of a variety of conditions to meet each tenant’s needs and provide each unit, courtyard, quarter, and block with a unique identity.
